Teachers' Week 2009

 

St. Lucia Teachers Union Teachers’ Week 2009
 The St. Lucia Teachers’ Union celebrated Teachers’ Week 2009 from October 4th to 11th under the theme “Build the Future: Invest in Education Now”. The week has been hailed as a massive success by all who participated, especially the executive of the union. All the activities were very well attended and there was enthusiastic participation from all members who were in attendance.
Our Annual Education Conference took place on Wednesday, October 7th and was held under the theme “Advancing Education amidst the Global Trends” The conference was addressed by the Minister of Education, the E.I. Regional Coordinator and the President of the St. Lucia Teachers’ Union. The main presenter at the conference was a member of the SLTU, Dr. Cordilia Ambrose, who impressed everyone with a very well researched exposition on the theme. The conference also provided for group discussions on selected sub themes:
1.       Transforming the Classroom
2.       Teacher Recruitment, Training Retention and Support
3.       Leadership in Education
4.       Vocational Training and Skill Development
5.       Role of SLTU in Education
6.       Teacher Professionalism
The St.Lucia Teachers’ Union paid tribute to the past executive officers of the union as part of our 75th anniversary celebrations. Many of the past executive officers turned out to a dinner held in their honour. The officers were elated by the activity and were happy to again be among colleagues and to share past experiences.
The SLTU Annual Teachers Rally culminated the week of activites. Hundreds of teachers turned out to celebrate the union and the profession. In attendance at the rally were the Deputy Chief Education Officer Ms. Marietta Edwards and other Ministry officials. The feature address was done by St. Lucia’s Ambassodor Extra-Ordinary& Plenipotentiary Dr. June Soomar. Dr. Soomar is also a former Deputy General Secretary of the St. Lucia Teachers’ Union.
